Kun Opera tour Essex
In January, Reece Productions were honoured with the task of providing technical support for the very prestigious Kun Opera Tour of Essex, as part of the continuing Essex-Jiangsu Festival organised by Essex County Council. The Kun Opera or “Kunqu” originated in the Kunshan region of the Jiangsu province in China over 500 years ago. Kun Opera has a complete system of acting as well as its own distinctive tunes. The orchestra consists of several traditional Chinese wind, string and percussion instruments, and the performers use music, voice, acting, mime and dance to express the full range of human emotions. For this tour the company performed excerpts from many different pieces. The brief was to provide full production and tour management for the tour, which included theatre dates as well as several interactive school workshops. Reece Productions provided three crew: Tour Manager - Alistair Bland; Sound Engineer - Matthew Manasse; and Projectionist – Chris (Wiz) Wisbey. The show required simultaneous translation in to English and Cantonese, which was provided by the visiting company as a PowerPoint show, which was re-branded by Reece Productions and displayed on an 8’ by 6’ screen using a Sanyo XP100 projector, operated back-stage by the company. Along with the projection system, Reece Productions provided some set elements (including a 4m by 6m red carpet!), microphones, Yamaha LS9-32 for control, and a small MiPro system for the school events. All of this, plus the Opera Companies instruments and costumes were transported by Reece Productions to each venue. Pre tour preparation and planning were essential to insuring the success of the tour, which was undertaken by James Reece-Ford and Gary Taylor, who both worked very closely with Belinda Farrell at Essex County Council, who promoted the whole event.
